From Felix the Cat to Full-Stack Dreams: My Journey into Web Design

Por Osvaldo Osorio

It all started with a felixthecat.gif, a simple notepad text file, and a few basic HTML tags. That moment feels like it was yesterday—the instant I realized that I wanted to create things for the internet. As soon as I saw that little animated cat bouncing across the screen, something clicked. There was something magical about typing a few lines of code and watching it come to life in a web browser. I knew then that this was more than just a hobby. It was a spark of something bigger.

Back then, the web was still a wild frontier.

My friends Maui, Jean Claude and I were just a bunch of kids with dial-up modems and big ideas. We built a virtual mall where each local business had its own website—one of those early internet experiments that seem quaint now but felt revolutionary at the time. Every HTML table, every marquee tag felt like a little victory. What’s even crazier is that we gained a reputation as the local web experts. Suddenly, people were reaching out to us for help with their online presence. Not only were we having fun, but we were getting paid to do what we loved.

Looking back, there’s a warm nostalgia in those early internet days. The creativity felt limitless, and everything seemed possible. We were making things up as we went along, driven by curiosity and passion. The tools were simple, the websites often clunky by today’s standards, but the excitement was palpable. We weren’t just building websites—we were building the future. And honestly, those early moments laid the foundation for everything I do today.

The heart of web design

As I reflect on that time, I can’t help but be filled with optimism about what’s next. The tools and technologies have advanced far beyond anything we could’ve imagined back then, but the sense of possibility is still the same. There’s something beautiful about being part of an industry that never stops evolving. From simple HTML to dynamic, responsive, and immersive experiences, I feel like I’m always learning, always growing.

The internet has come a long way since those days of pixelated gifs and static websites, but in many ways, the heart of web design remains unchanged: it’s about connection, creativity, and problem-solving. Whether I’m working on a new web application, developing a custom CMS, or helping a brand define their digital strategy, I’m still fueled by that same passion that started with a notepad file and an animated gif.

Endless opportunities to build

I’m excited about the future of web design and development. Who knows where the next big leap will take us? But one thing is certain—the foundation I built all those years ago will always guide me forward. And just like that first virtual mall we created, I know there are endless opportunities to build something meaningful in this ever-changing digital landscape.
